<image:title>Turmeric- The Golden Herb Anyone Can Enjoy - RESEARCH</image:title>
<image:caption>New interest in turmeric: Despite longstanding use in India and China, the therapeutic actions of turmeric were not researched until recent decades when there was an upsurge of interest in foods and medicine that lower cholesterol levels or have antioxidant properties (neutralize harmful free radicals). Research since the early 1070s, mainly in India, has confirmed turmeric’s traditional actions and revealed potential new uses for it. Anti-inflammatory: Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory. It has a stronger action than hydrocortisone, according to research studies conducted between 1971 and 1991. Curcumin: When applied to the skin and exposed to sunlight, turmeric is strongly antibacterial. Curcumin is the constituent responsible for this action. Curcumin is also more strongly antioxidant than vitamin E. Cholesterol: Chinese clinical trials in 1987 indicate that turmeric lowers cholesterol levels. Cancer: Turmeric may be a valuable preventive remedy for those at risk of developing cancer. But more research is needed. Other actions: Research has shown that turmeric has an anticoagulant action, keeping the blood thin. It also increases bile production and flow and has a protective action on the stomach and liver. <image:caption>Nettles strengthen and supports the whole body. Nettles has a wide range of uses: the fresh, chopped leaves as a bandage for septic wounds, the juice for nose bleeds, the cooked leaves mixed with myrrh to stimulate menstruation. Nettle is also used for hay fever, arthritis, and for skin conditions. It is an excellent remedy for anemia- the vitamin C content ensures that the iron it contains is properly absorbed. Aerial parts are eaten as a tonic vegetable and used to make medicinal preparations. As an alterative, nettle is a cleansing, detoxifying herb. Its diuretic action is due to its flavonoids and high potassium content. This increases urine production and elimination of waste products. In fact, its diuretic action helps in many skin conditions and arthritic problems. This herb is beneficial in cases of childhood eczema especially nervous eczema. The young nettle leaves can be steamed as a potherb. It is invaluable as a food, rich in vitamins and minerals, and as a medicine. The blood-invigorating properties of stinging nettles make them appropriate for girls at puberty and women at menopause. As an antiallergenic, nettle treats hay fever, asthma, asthma, itchy skin conditions, and insect bites. The juice is used to treat nettle stings. To help alleviate painful areas such as arthritis, one has to sting oneself with deliberately over the affected area with freshly picked nettle leaves. Externally, nettle tea or juice is applied to the scalp to help stimulate hair growth. Plus, a nettle rinse can eliminate dandruff.</image:caption>

In the 1st century AD, the reek physician, Dioscorides listed a range of its uses- the fresh, chopped leaves as a bandage for septic wounds, the juice for nosebleeds, and the cooked leaves mixed with myrrh to stimulate menstruation. Research: German research showed that stinging nettles have a marked anti-inflammatory action. People with arthritis taking 50g of the herb a day reported a significant improvement of their symptoms. Also, U.S., Japan, and Germany research established stinging nettles’ value as a medicine for prostates hypertrophy. Check out my Nettle Burger Patty recipe in my E-Book! <image:title>Ginger- The Golden, Pungent Fixer Healer - Pertinent Information</image:title>
<image:caption>Ginger’s therapeutic benefits are due to the ginger’s volatile oil and oleoresin content. Gingerol, an acrid constituent, is responsible for the herb’s hot taste and stimulating properties. Shogaols, a key constituent that forms as the herb dries, are more irritant and acrid than the constituents present in the fresh rhizome. As a spice and a flavoring, ginger is one of the world’s best medicines. Ginger brings relief to digestion caused by motion sickness, morning sickness, and other causes. As a carminative herb, it promotes gastric secretion making it an excellent remedy for digestive complaints such as is used in indigestion, nausea, dyspepsia, flatulence and colic. As a gargle, it may be effective in relieving sore throats. Ginger is highly effective for motion sickness, useful for relieving postoperative nausea. Its warming and stimulating properties promotes gastric secretion, aiding in the absorption of food and bowel movements. Ginger stems and rhizomes are crystallized into candy and used as an effective drug for traveling sickness. As an important circulatory remedy, ginger stimulates peripheral circulation and helps blood flow up to the surface, making it an important remedy in cases of chilblains, cramps, and bad/poor circulation (especially to the hands and feet). Ginger hand and foot baths can help with cold hands and feet too. Ginger is a milder stimulant. By improving circulation, ginger stimulates the heart which helps with blood pressure. Externally, ginger is the base of many fibrositis and muscle sprain treatments. It is also applied as a fomentation for the treatment of pain, inflammation and stiff joints. Fresh grated ginger combined with equal parts of olive or sesame oil can be massaged into skin for muscle pain relief. The infused ginger oil can also be applied to the head for dandruff. A few drops of the ginger oil on a wad of cotton inserted into the ear is good for treating earaches. Ginger juice or tea is massaged into scalp in order to stimulate hair growth.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Plantain quickly staunches blood flow and encourages the repair of damaged tissue. This makes plantain useful to stop bleeding and promote the healing of wounds and injuries. As a gentle expectorant, it soothes inflamed and sore membranes making it ideal for coughs and bronchitis. Furthermore, its internal use serves as a decongestant and diuretic. Also, Plantain is excellent remedy in kidney and bladder troubles. Externally, the ointment or lotion form of plantain is used to treat hemorrhoids, fistulae and ulcers. The poultice of leaves is applied to antidote bites and stings of venomous insects and animals as well as to treat boils, eruptive skin disorders, and deep-seated infections. The herb has excellent drawing properties to draw the poison out. The poison of fresh stings is extracted rapidly, often within an hour’s times. In serious cases, an extract of tea or tincture is taken internally, in addition to the poultice, every half hour until symptoms subside.</image:caption>

<image:title>Plantain- Truly a White Man’s Foot - Related Species & History</image:title>
<image:caption>Related Species: The broad-leaved plantain is called Plantago major (Common Plantain) and the narrow leaved-variety is called Plantago lanceolate (Ribwort Plantain). P. major is the preferred plantain herb over P. lanceolate. Plantain asiatica (Che qian cao) is used in Chinese medicine as a diuretic and to counteract mucus. History: In feudal Russia, the serfs noticed that travelers sewed plantain seeds and recited prayers in order to bring good to the herbs growth. Because traveling was a dangerous endeavor in those days, Russian serfs regarded readily available food from the nature God’s gift to travelers. Plantain is known for its tenacity and ability to thrive in disturbed soil, allowing the rapid proliferation of the herb rapidly in colonized lands. When European settlers brought the plant to the Americas, the Indigenous people noticed that wherever the Europeans went that plantain would sprout there. Hence, the indigenous people nicknamed plantain “white man’s foot”. Reference Herb Rally. Plantain (Plantago spp) Monograph. https://www.herbrally.com/monographs/plantain</image:caption>

<image:title>St John’s Wort- A Red Ray of Sunshine - History & Research</image:title>
<image:caption>In medieval Europe, it was considered to protect against ill health and evil influences. Medicinally, it was thought to heal wounds and “down-heartedness.” In the 19th century, the herb fell into disuse, but recent research has brought it back into prominence as a very valuable medicine for nervous exhaustion, depression, and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). St. John’s wort has an ancient reputation for warding off witchcraft which may be due to the plant’s wide range of medicinal uses. RESEARCH: Depression: Clinical research from the 1970s onward has established that St. John’s wort is an effective antidepressant. In a recent study in Austria 67% of patients with mild to moderate depression improved when given an extract of the herb. Hypericin: Hypericin has a marked antiviral activity. It (and to a much lesser extent, the whole herb) appears to act against enveloped viruses, e.g. herpes viruses and HIV, as well as hepatitis B and C. in controlled studies, the hypericins relieved symptoms of anxiety and depression in women probably through a process of monoamineoxidase inhibition. Safety: St. John’s wort is a very safe medicine. However, the herb does interact with many conventional medicines, reducing their effectiveness and potentially causing serious health problems. Those taking prescribed medication should consult their medical or herbal practitioner before taking St. John’s wort. Prickly comfrey originated from Asia as a feed plant for pigs, rabbits and goats, Like Common comfrey, Prickly comfrey is used externally as a poultice to heal wounds and reduce joint inflammation. <image:title>Comfrey- Nature Band-Aid, Inside and Out - Cautionary Pearls</image:title>
<image:caption>Comfrey has high pyrrolizidine alkaloid content which is toxic to the liver. This constituent increases the liver enzyme levels in the body. Therefore, alcoholics and those with liver disease or chronic conditions that leads to liver disease should avoid taking comfrey. Also, for healthy individuals taking comfrey, be sure to monitor your liver enzyme levels through your regular blood tests that you get from the doctors office. Since comfrey absorbs easily through the skin, wearing gloves when applying the ointment, cream or poultice is preferable. Because of its rapid healing properties, comfrey must not be used on dirty wounds because, the rapid healing with trap the dirt leading to pus/abscess. Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding. Avoid excess consumption. USE FOR AT LEAST 6 WEEKS AND NOT MORE THAN THAT! As for internally use, I have had good experience using the Russian comfrey (Symphytum x uplandicum) internally, for 6 weeks, with no incident. If you decide to use this particular species, be sure that the herbalist or the person behind the counter gives you this brand. There is another species known as Common comfrey (Symphytum x officinale) which should be used only topically and can be easily confused for the Russian comfrey. If your liver is congested and weak, the fresh mature leaves can be used in place of the fresh, young ones.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cayenne Pepper- Muy Caliente, and Loving it! - Pertinent Information</image:title>
<image:caption>Cayenne is a powerful and most useful of the systemic and local stimulant, producing a burning sensation on contact with the skin. As a warming stimulant, cayenne is a valuable remedy for poor circulation, improving blood flow to the hands and feet and to the central organs. Applied to the skin, capsaicin desensitizes nerve endings and acts as a counter irritant, stimulating blood flow. This is due to its rubefacient characteristic- increased blood flow to the affected part, and this helps to stimulate circulation in cold rheumatic and arthritic conditions. In turn, this aids in the removal of waste products and increases the flow of nutrients to the tissues. Externally, cayenne pepper is used in ointment, liniments, and plasters to treat muscular pains, arthritis, rheumatic pains, psoriasis, headache, neuralgia, lumbago, and unbroken chilblains (use in moderation).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Related Species: The genus Capsicum includes red and green chilies, cayenne, paprika, and bell peppers. Many closely related species and varieties of C. frutescens exist, all with different grades of pungency. Paprika or Hungarian pepper (one of the mildest peppers), and the large green and red peppers that are eaten as vegetables are both varieties of C. annuum and are important medicinal foods. More Information: Just drop by any organic foods store and ask for the organic cayenne pepper. The organic one is reddish orange in color, not dark red (that one is not organic and is probably less than 80,000 units in strength). You want the organic, SUPER HOT one that is at least above 80,000 units. I say 80,000 units because that was what the legendary herbalist, Dr John Christopher started out with. There are lesser strength units out here, but I recommend starting with 80,000 units if you want to see results. And please, take your time ingesting the cayenne/honey paste; just ingest it with a spoon and enjoy with any tea of your choice; preferably herbal tea. If you want to learn more about this amazing herb, you can get Curing with Cayenne: A Layman's Guide by Sam Biser from Amazon, as well as the VHS tapes that come with it. <image:title>Dandelion- A Poor Man's Diuretic - Pertinent Information</image:title>
<image:caption>Dandelion root is one of the most effective detoxifying herbs, targeting primarily the liver and gall bladder to help remove wastes. It stimulates the kidneys to remove toxins in the urine and encourages steady elimination of toxins due to pollution or infections. For the liver, dandelion has the capacity to clear obstructions and stimulate and aid the liver to eliminate toxins from the blood. This makes dandelion a blood purifying herb particularly due to it high mineral content. Dandelion leaves are a very powerful diuretic and one of the most natural sources of potassium. The diuretic power is comparable to Furosemide but unlike Furosemide, dandelion does not leach potassium from the body. This makes this herb ideal for water retention due to heart problems as well as decreasing blood pressure. Additionally, its high nutritive minerals are helpful in treating anemia. The seeds is also an excellent form of food for explorers and adventurers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Dandelion- A Poor Man's Diuretic - What else can dandelion do?</image:title>
<image:caption>Dandelion is beneficial for many conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis. As part of a wider treatment for arthritic conditions like osteoarthritis and gout as well as muscular rheumatism, dandelion root and leaves are most effective. Again, this happens through the cleansing of the blood and the bodily tissues. A tonic salad made with dandelion leaves can be eaten regularly for its cleansing benefits. The young dandelion leaves can be eaten fresh as steam pot-herb. With chicory and endive greens, it provides a pleasant source of mild vegetables bitter necessary for balance nutrition. Roasted dandelion root makes a pleasant beverage especially as a suitable coffee substitute which can be consumed daily. It combines well with roasted bancha or kukicha tea or chicory root.</image:caption>

<image:title>Homemade Ginger Ale - My Story</image:title>
<image:caption>This was one of the first herbal recipes that I made when I started my herbal journey. It was the spring of my final year in pharmacy school. I could still remember the chill in the air of the cold winter morning. After reading about ginger syrup, I decided to make a simple ginger ale. When I was done, I shared some with my LandLady. She loved the ginger ale. And so did I.</image:caption>
